UPS Battery And Uninterrupted Power Supply Units

Uninterrupted power supply units store power in a UPS battery during the times when there is regular utility power flowing to the devices that it is protecting. If the utility power shuts off or is disconnected, the UPS will continue to deliver a steady stream of electricity to the devices.

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) devices provide a continuous supply of electricity to equipment that is connected. A uninterruptible power supply is placed between utility power and the devices that are to receive UPS power if the main utility power is interrupted.

Though UPS devices have been very expensive throughout history, they have become very affordable over the last couple of decades. Now, UPS units are commonplace in home offices, data centers and businesses everywhere.

You can buy an uninterrupted power supply for a single computer that isn’t even strong enough to power the monitor, or huge UPS devices to power entire data centers for large companies.

The North American Blackout of 2003 was probably the single most impressive event that more recently has helped many people to reconsider their need for an uninterrupted power supply for their offices.

The biggest attraction to and use of UPS units is o protect data. Everywhere people have sensitive information that they don’t want to loose due to a storm or power outage.

There are also many applications where UPS devices are put in place to safeguard lives. In hospitals and other medical care facilities, uninterrupted power supplies are waiting in back up to run life support machines and all sorts of devices and systems that are keeping animals, plants and people as alive and healthy as possible.

Using A Battery Charger: Degrees of Sustainability

Finding a battery charger online is easy as long as you know what to look for. And that’s the thing about shopping online: it’s so easy to do a little research and quickly discover which products performed the best for others, as well as learn more about the various advantages and disadvantages of particular items.

I love rechargeable batteries. My family goes through so many batteries for the CD player, the digital media player, flashlights and more that I’m sure we’d spend at least three times as much if we used disposable batteries instead.

Some people say that the metal hydride batteries seem to charge faster and last longer. It seems to me that this may be true, but I can’t say that I’ve performed any strict scientific studies with which to verify these claims.

The nickel cadmium battery is slowly being replaced by the nickel metal hydride variety. Since the general consensus is that the metal hydride is the more technologically advanced battery it stands to reason that it’s likely to perform better in various areas, from charging speed to output life.

Besides using rechargeable batteries, there is also the option to choose mechanistic devise where possible. For example, a clock that must be wound periodically does not use any type of electricity, from a battery or the wall circuit.

After all, when we charge our batteries the power comes from somewhere. So, a truly sustainable solution for our powered devices would side step the battery issue altogether. But until then, the rechargeable battery is certainly an important step.

Battery Capacity

Battery capacity refers to the amount of power that an electric battery is capable of holding. This term is often used in association with rechargeable batteries, as due to the strange memory effect that older types of batteries exhibit, they will not hold as much power over time unless they are drained before they are recharged.

Nickel Cadmium batteries are the most traditional of the electric batteries of modern day. These are the batteries that are notorious for suffering from the memory effect. If you constantly recharge a nickel cadmium battery when it is nearly full you will soon find yourself having to charge the battery more than you’re using the power it’s built up.

The memory effect seems to work as though whatever the power level of the battery in question when it goes into the battery charger, it sort of ‘resets’ it’s memory in such a way that the given amount becomes zero, or no power to the battery. It will never be able to put more charge into the space that it considers to fall outside of that new range.

Some people think that nickel metal hydride batteries do not suffer from the memory effect at all, where others swear they have noticed a memory effect, though not as pronounced as with more traditional nickel cadmium batteries.

There are two much newer battery types that successfully avoid the memory effect issue altogether. The lithium ion and the lithium polymer batteries can be recharged at any point and will never have decreased battery capacity.

So make your choices wisely. These main battery types are found in everything from double A’s to laptop batteries and cell phone batteries. Regardless of the application, the different types have these advantages and disadvantages mentioned above.

Buying Battery Accessories Online

Battery accessories definitely fit in the category of little things that are easy to buy online and save a lot of money. I like to make larger, infrequent purchases of these general home supplies at online stores or online auctions.

Since I only buy these basic supplies a couple of times a year, I can afford to watch for the best sales and auction deals. There are some really great deals online, you just have to be there when they happen.

I like using an auction watch service that notifies me when auctions for certain items are currently being run. That way I don’t have to spend lots of time searching through current auctions, I can simply browse through the emails they send and click on the auctions that sound the most likely to have what I’m looking for.

Another nice thing about buying goods at online auction websites is that many times the sellers will have related items up for auction at the same time. This way you can save on shipping costs and pick up the additional items you will eventually need at the same time.

Before assuming that a seller will combine shipping on various auction items, take the time to read through their auction terms. If they do not mention whether of not they are willing to combine shipping, send them an email. Though most sellers are willing to offer shipping discounts on multiple items, there are some that will or can not do so.

I found a few auction sellers from whom I purchase all my batteries and battery accessories. I was able to find all the types and sizes of rechargeable batteries that I need, as well as chargers, wires, adapters and those little things that make my devices work the way I want.

The main thing to remember about shopping for battery accessories online is simply to get chargers and accessories that will work with the type of battery that you have. If a seller’s item details are not explicit enough that you are sure it will work with your batteries, keep looking. It can be frustrating to have to return items from online retailers or auction sellers.

There are various types of rechargeable batteries. Some hold charges longer and have longer overall life spans. Nickel cadmium batteries are the traditional battery and will eventually hold less charge over time. The newest batteries are lithium ion and lithium polymer batteries that will last longer and hold more charge.

Rechargeable Batteries: History and Future

The rechargeable battery is an electric battery that can be brought back to a state of full charge with the application of an electric current of some type. Today, rechargeable batteries have become very common. We use them for all kinds of household and communication devices, from music players to cell phones and video games.

There are several types of batteries, both disposable and rechargeable. We’ll cover the most popular types and some of their respective advantages and disadvantages.

The nickel cadmium rechargeable battery is the most traditional battery. Its main drawback is the memory oddity it exhibits, where over time it can hold less and less of a charge. This can be avoided by draining the battery completely before charging it again.

Most of the other types of rechargeable batteries in use today are variations of the traditional nickel cadmium battery that are able to hold more charge, hold charge for longer and / or deliver more voltage over a given period of time. There has also been an effort to turn away from batteries that suffer from the battery capacity memory effect that nickel cadmium batteries do.

The nickel metal hydride battery has some great advantages over the more traditional nickel cadmium battery. It holds a stronger charge and for a longer period of time. Supposedly the nickel metal hydride doesn’t suffer memory battery capacity problems, but not everyone agrees that there is no capacity loss over time.

More recently, lithium batteries are superseding nickel based batteries. The lithium polymer battery holds a greater charge for a much longer period of time (two to three times as long, even for power hogs like digital cameras) and can come in may more shapes than traditional nickel batteries.

All lithium batteries can be shaped into unique forms because the internal cells are plastic pouches that are flexible, rather than the hard metal casing of the internal cells of traditional nickel based batteries.

Lithium ion batteries are a notch up from lithium polymer batteries and have a very high charge density. For portable rechargeable equipment and devices these are the best you can get. They are not affected by loss of capacity over time and provide a consistent supply of energy.

Lithium batteries cost as much as three times nickel metal hydride batteries. If you really don’t like how the lithium battery prices look up against your personal finances, then opt for the metal hydride. If you’re used to Ni-Cad batteries you’ll notice a difference without paying the exorbitant amount that lithium batteries demand. Plus, when it’s time to spring for the lithium battery you can rotate between the two and increase the lifespan of both of them.

Lithium Ion Battery: Cutting Edge Worth 3 Times As Much ?

The nickel cadmium battery has long been the standard battery, for both disposable as well as rechargeable battery use. Over the last decade we’ve seen the standard nickel cadmium joined by nickel metal-hydride and then more recently the lithium batteries, but are these cutting edge batteries really worth the steep prices?

Of course there are various applications and various markets and battery prices, but across the board at this point in time, lithium ion and lithium polymer batteries cost anywhere from two to three times as much or more than any other types of batteries.

As battery technology and design continues to improve there are steady increases in charge capacity and length of charge viability. The nickel metal hydride battery showed noticeable improvements as far as overall charge quality is concerned.

One of the aims of the nickel metal hydride battery was also to overcome the disadvantage of nickel cadmium batteries where charge capacity becomes significantly diminished over time. While I believe this to have been accomplished, I do think that capacity is affected over time, but nearly as much as with nickel cadmium batteries.

The lithium ion battery is supposed to be a whole new strata of success in that it is impervious to the memory effect that decreases charge capacity over time. It holds a much higher density charge for much longer periods of time. Even power vampires like digital cameras can run for two to three times as long on a lithium ion battery.

But do lithium ion batteries always last two to three times as long? No. Depending on the device and usage habits, there are situations where a lithium ion battery will not last much longer than a nickel metal hydride battery.

For power hungry and frequently used devices like laptops, video game systems, media players and cell phones, you probably will notice the extended use time of a lithium ion battery, but for low demand devices or ones you don’t use that often I doubt that the difference would be worth the heftier price.

In fact, a lot of experimentation and research has shown that the charger we use can have more to do with overall rechargeable battery performance than the type of battery we choose. So it’s worth doing a little research on the current models of battery chargers before investing in a whole new type of battery and accessories.

The Laptop Battery: How To Get The Most Life From Your Laptop Battery

You can expect the typical laptop battery to last about two years with regular use and handling. There are also some steps you can take to add life to each charge as well as get better battery performance overall. Consider the following points and get more out of your laptop battery:

• Though there remains some argument as to whether Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries suffer from the memory effect or not. Either way, it’s a good idea not to charge this type of laptop battery until the battery is as low as possible.

• Charge your laptop battery for at least 12 hours before using it again. Many times a battery charger’s ‘fully charged’ indicator light will come on before the battery is truly as full of power as it can get. You may as well let it soak of a full 12 hours if you want to get every drop of power you can.

• There is also evidence that seems to suggest that using two batteries over one battery more than doubles the overall life spans of both batteries. So, the more batteries you rotate, the more you’ll get out of each of them.

• Another simple way to use less battery power is to plug your laptop into a wall circuit when you will be using things that take more power such as the CD player or floppy drive.

• Reducing the display brightness of your laptop screen can also play a part in reducing overall battery usage.

Though you will probably have to charge the laptop battery more often as time goes on, if you adopt some of the tips mentioned above it will take longer for this to take place. When it gets to be too much, it’s time to buy another laptop battery. Top of the line in life and delivery today are the Lithium-Ion and Lithium Polymer laptop batteries.

The History Of Batteries

Alessandro Volta developed the Voltaic pile in 1800, which became and remains to be part of today’s modern batteries. The battery industry generates more than $48 billions in annual sales.

Though it remains unproven, there is great speculation that galvanic cell batteries were used between 250 B.C.E. and 640 C.E. In Egyptian archeological digs too were found many battery-like devices. But since there was no evidence such as wires, diagrams or writings detailing how these devices would be used, it is difficult to substantiate the claims that these ancient objects were indeed batteries.

Employing the term ‘battery’ to describe any charge or storage device, as he became more engaged in his own electrical researches in 1748. Until that time the term ‘battery’ was used more in association with collections of active military units or weapons, such as a ‘battery’ of cannons.

A galvanic cell produces lower voltage than the earlier electrostatic generators, but the miraculous thing is that the electricity is produced merely by combining two different metals and a substance through which the metals connect.

During this era, the scientific community referred to the electric battery as a ‘pile’ or an ‘accumulator’, as well as an ‘artificial electrical organ’. All batteries use a direct current system where electrons flow in only one direction.

As times have advanced, we’ve seen batteries that last longer, have more voltage and even the advent of consumer rechargeable batteries for everything from watches to digital cameras. Digital Camera Battery

Let’s face it, nothing sucks the life out of a pair of double As like a digital camera. I’ve owned digital cameras that could drain disposable double A batteries in less than half an hour with consistent use. Besides changing to rechargeable batteries, what’s a person to do about the way cameras burn through batteries?

Well, for one thing, most digital cameras have a setting that allows you to always have the LCD screen running or only when you push a button. If you turn on this power saving feature you will have to press a button to see the LCD readout, but you may be surprised by how much longer your batteries last.

Another power sucker is the built in flash on digital cameras. Many people never adjust their camera’s settings for indoor and outdoor use. Though it’s tempting to leave the camera on auto, I find I get better pictures and use less power when I manually disable the flash for pictures in brighter, outdoor areas.

Though most digital cameras set to automatically use the flash when things are too dark, will use the flash in some borderline situations where the pictures would actually turn out better without using a flash at all.

For digital camera use all those same pros and cons of different types apply, but the rigors of use in digital cameras take a toll on all types of batteries and there are a few other ways to deal with the issues.

One thing to consider is the battery charger you use. It’s worth doing some research on battery chargers and related performance. As it turns out, how batteries are charged can have a lot to do with how much charge they hold as well as how long a charge is held before dissipating.

Cell Phone Battery Types

There are four main types of cell phone battery in use today and they are as follows:

• Li-Poly (Lithium Polymer)

• Li-Ion (Lithium Ion)

• NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride)

• NiCad (Nickel Cadmium)

Lithium Polymer or Li-Poly cell phone batteries are super lightweight and will not explode when crushed. These are considered to be the most advanced technology in the area of cell phone batteries.

With this type of cell phone battery, the operative part is enclosed in plastic pouches instead of hard metal casings. This flexibility translates to limitless battery shapes so that cell phone batteries can better mold smaller or oddly shaped phones.

Lithium Polymer cell phone batteries have many of the same features as Lithium Ion batteries, but are lighter and flexible.

Both Lithium Polymer and Lithium Ion batteries biggest advantage is that they do not have a ‘memory’ of how low their power was when they were placed in the charger.

Traditional batteries, even the metal hydrides used today, though not as noticeable, all have a peculiar tendency to reset their capacity according to how much power still remained when the battery is charged. So if we charge our cell phone battery when it is not dead, over time we condition the battery to ‘think’ that it’s empty when it may have 50% or even a full amount of power.

Many people claim that Nickel Metal Hydride batteries do not suffer from the memory effect at all. Metal hydride cell phone batteries are an improvement over Nickel Cadmium batteries and tend to last 30-40% longer for every charge.

Nickel Cadmium cell hone batteries do suffer from the memory effect. If you’ve ever had a Nickel Cadmium cell phone battery you may have noticed this. Over time your phone just couldn’t hold as much of a charge. If you do own a Nickel Cadmium cell phone battery you can help the issue by waiting until your cell phone battery is as low as possible before charging it.
